When aniline interacts with nitrous acid at low temperatures (0-50 C),\u00a0benzene diazonium\u00a0chloride is obtained as the final product. When the temperature rises, benzene diazonium chloride decomposes into phenol. Diazonium salts are crystalline, colorless solids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. These are easily dissolved in water but less so in alcohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. They are fragile and can explode when dried. As a result, they are typically employed in the solution state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Allowing the diazonium chloride to react&nbsp;in the presence of hypophosphorous acid leads to nitrogen loss and hypophosphorous acid oxidation to phosphorous acid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-accent-color has-text-color\"><strong>ArN<sub>2<\/sub><sup>+<\/sup>Cl<sup>\u2013&nbsp;<\/sup>+ H<sub>3<\/sub>PO<sub>2&nbsp;<\/sub>+ H<sub>2<\/sub>O \u2192 ArH + N<sub>2&nbsp;<\/sub>+ H<sub>3<\/sub>PO<sub>3&nbsp;<\/sub>+ HCl<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"replacement-by-oh-group\"><\/span><strong>Replacement by -OH group<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Benzene diazonium chloride reacts with water to form phenol. This reaction is slow in ice-cold diazonium salt solutions, which is why diazonium salts are employed immediately after synthesis; at higher temperatures, it can be made the primary reaction of diazonium chloride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-accent-color has-text-color\"><strong>ArN<sub>2<\/sub><sup>+<\/sup>Cl<sup>\u2013&nbsp;<\/sup>+ H<sub>2<\/sub>O \u2192 ArOH + N<sub>2&nbsp;<\/sub>+ H<sup>+<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"coupling-reactions\"><\/span><strong>Coupling Reactions<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Diazonium chloride easily reacts with phenols, naphthols, and aromatic amines to form colored azo compounds. The -N=N- bond joins both aromatic rings in azo products, resulting in an extended conjugated system. These materials are frequently dyed\u00a0and colored. When benzene diazonium chloride interacts with phenol, the para position of the phenol molecule is connected to the diazonium salt, yielding p-hydroxy azobenzene. This is referred to as a coupling reaction. Aniline also reacts with\u00a0diazonium chloride\u00a0to generate p-amino azobenzene. Instead of CuCl, copper powder with HCl can be used. Hydrolysis of these nitriles produces carboxylic acid. This is known as the Gomberg-Bachmann reaction. Straight halogenation is not even an option for preparing aryl iodides and fluorides.
