One day, he mixed mercury and nitric acid, resulting in the oxidation of mercury\u00a0calx' into red mercuric oxide.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>This procedure became known as oxidation. He next added hydrochloric acid, which converted the mercuric chloride to metallic mercury on top of what the nitric acid had left behind!
